How Do All ,
A while ago , I was meandering through the archives catalogue for , The National Brewery Centre based on Horninglow St in Burton on Trent looking for source materials for my research into beer & brewing history in Lancashire and , Yorkshire and Burton ; After a fair bit of digging around in the catalogue , I was able to find quite a few records that were of relevance to my research .
After a quick initial telephone call with the National Brewery Heritage Trust`s Collections Manager ; I fired off an e mail with the list o` doom and the catalogue references in order that the owners of the doccuments to grant access permission ; a few weeks later the permission was duly granted .
Sadly as it turned out , the Caterall & Swarbrick record turned out to be just a general financial ledger relating to income & expenditure as opposed to brewing and process etc ( 1890`s ), thus negating the Lancastrian portion of my research trip , However the wealth of information contained in the other items was very much of interest .
After a pleasant if somewhat early train journey I arrived in Burton at around 09:30 , Just in time to grab a quick brew and Sausage & Egg on toast before ambling down Station St and towards The National Brewery Centre on Horninglow St

I
arrived at the NBC in time to see a staff member opening the doors , so after a moment or two to finish my coffee , I entered and found my way to the reception / shop desk ; after a moment to explain the helpfull team member kindly phoned upstairs and after a short delay I was shown up to the archives by Vanessa Winstone , the Collections Manager , who with the assistance of the Centr volunteers had got the materials I`d ordered ready .

And yes , I did manage to visit The Roebuck just up the street where more delicious nectar was consumed before catching the train back north ; Sadly no exterior pic , just this one !
If you`re able to support my research with photos or , access to old brewing records, I`m especially keen to look at any brewing records up to 1920 or so from Lancashire and Yorkshire ; please get in touch with me @ beerhistorybloke@gmail.com ;
I look forward to hearing from you .
Cheers All ,

Can't wait to see those recipes! :p
ReplyDeleteHi Daniel,
DeleteDue to the access agreement, I'm sadly unable to publish beer recipies from these sources ; I have found an Allsopp's recipie or two from the 1940's in the Scottish Brewing Archive: https://beerhistorybloke.blogspot.com/2023/05/samuel-allsopp-sons-no-3-1942.html
Cheers 🍻
