How Do All ,
As I mentioned in the revised post for the Tetley Pale Ale from 1916 I posted earlier ;
I`ve begun to look at the older posts and the data I`ve managed to garner from my regrettably
Few visits to public archives .
After looking at the data I have from my visit to the friendly & helpfull team in Nottingham
At Nottinghamshire Archives , I realised I hadn`t done anything with the ` Brewing ` records of
James Shipstone & Sons Ltd ; With the photos taken from what I`d say were ` Cost Price Books ` ,
These give the weights of the ingredients used yet , Annoyingly as is the want of many Cost Price
Books , these don`t have any mashing or , attenuation details .
One other featue of note is that the Hops in both Copper and To Casks are given as Gross Weight
Totals Eg : 1,163 Lbs to Copper and eg : 4 Ounces per barrel ( Lbs Used Total in record ) ;
This means that the attenuation points given in the table below are , My own inference based
On both period and area practice .
The consistency of range is quite remarkable with a great many brewings of XX and XXX ,
In both single and Parti Gyle form , with A K and I P A being two of the least brewed types ;
The table below examples the range of beers entered up in the records .

James Shipstone & Sons Ltd ; A Short History
Founded by the eponymous James Shipstone in 1852 ;
The Star Brewery was registered as a limited company in February 1891 ,
In order to consolidate the business carried on under that name , trading as J Shipstone & Sons .
In 1898 the brewery purchased their local rivals The Carrington Brewery Co of Jenner St in
Carrington and at the start of the 20 Th Century , the company commissioned the noted brewery
Architect , William Bradford to design the enlarged premises so familiar to many natives
Of Nottingham and beyond .
The brewery , In common with many others weathered the storms of trade provided by the advent
Of The Great War ; By 1922 they were to purchase The Beeston Brewery Co Ltd , Following this
In 1926 with their purchase of George Hooley`s Wheatsheaf Brewery .
Following the cessation of hostilities in 1945 the company continued to thrive ,
Buting their near neighbours : T Losco Bradley & Co of The Midland Brewery in 1954 .
Sadly the independent brewing of Shipstones in Nottingham was to end in 1978 with the purchase
Of the Brewery & Estates by Greenall Whitley & Co of Warrington * ;
Though production of ` Shippo`s ` ales was to continue at their original home until 1990 .
I hope that you all find the article & table of interest
