How Do All ,
Here`s a post about a ` Lost ` Edinburgh / Leith brewery , Robert Whitson & Co ;
Of the Yard Heads area of Leith. Established by the 1830`s ( Gray`s Directory 1837 ) ,
the brewery continued under the stewardship of Robert Whitson until the mid to late 1850`s;
as by the time of the 1856-8 Post Office Directory , the brewery`s entry was absent .
No doubt due to the owner`s emigration to the land of the Long White Cloud around the same time , where Robert Whitson continued his career in the brewing industry after a brief spell as a farmer , eventually founding the Albert Brewery in Auckland where he was an active member of the community until his death on the 26 Th of November 1889.
The source of this cerevesian discovery is the internationally important Scottish Brewing Archive,
cared for by the folks st The University of Glasgow, Special Collections & Archives on Thurso St.
The 1847 brewing book contains the production records for Geddes, Sutherland & Co from 1847 , together with scattered brewings from the 1830`s as well as notes on non brewing related subjects .
However, sandwiched between the Elgin Brewery records towards the rear of the volume are,
a few pages simply headed " Brewings copied from Whitson , Leith " , some with specific brewing dates and others with their production specifications stipulated in the records .
This post uses materials taken from my article in the current edition (No 56) of the newsletter of the
Scottish Brewing Archive Association : Home - Scottish Brewing Archive Association

Sadly the 1847 Brewing Book from the West Brewery , Elgin is the only known survivor;
( in a public archive ) from a brewery in the Highlands ,
So if any readers have records from Scottish breweries in their own collections and are able to allow access / send photos , Please get in touch , I`d love to hear from you.
Cheers All ,
